Objectives

Healthcare Leader is the brand for primary care in the health and care system focussed on the challenges and priorities facing this group of leaders. Building on our years of supporting the clinical commissioner community, we have produced the Countdown to Net Zero: climate change and the NHS report which takes an in-depth look at this issue.

Launched in May 2024, the Healthcare Leader sustainability report explores the NHS work towards a net zero target by 2040 and for emissions it can influence by 2045.

Our approach

Building on our roundtable on sustainability, this report looks at medicines, waste, estates and transport to see the latest development in these areas in the NHS system to tackle climate change and reach the net zero emissions target by 2040.

To gain greater insight on developments in this area we spoke to head of sustainability at NHS Supply Chain, Heidi Barnard, and director of SEE Sustainability Dr Matthew Sawyer about what more can be done at a system and practice level.

Editor, Victoria Vaughan, says: ‘With budgets tight and patient demand rising, the focus on sustainability might be hard to maintain. However, as our report highlights, the health benefits of making inroads on carbon emissions and improving our environment are obvious and ultimately lead back to a healthier population.

Since launch, the report has been promoted to our community of healthcare professionals, via a variety of tactics, including online advertising, emails, and social media – via Healthcare Leader but also via our sister publications Pulse, Nursing in Practice and The Pharmacist.

Outcome

  • 1,000+ report views

The report has generated fantastic engagement and discussion since launch, with over 1,000 page views and a higher engagement time compared to other content on the site.

Healthcare Leader provides a platform for senior clinical leads in NHS primary care to ensure they stay up to date with all the financial and political news. Through our regular roundtables and report, we share innovative ideas to help them in making the tough decisions which effect patient care – all of which are available for sponsorship.

Most recently, the Healthcare Leader Inclusion health roundtable brought five NHS leaders and experts in ICB work in this area, to dive into inclusion health groups and discuss the pertinent and pressing matters concerning provision of care the system.
