An exclusive analysis by Nursing in Practice looked into speaking up in primary care, exploring current processes and the experiences of general practice nurses (GPNs) who whistle blow at work.
This summer, Nursing in Practice explored the issue of speaking up and raising concerns within primary care. Indeed, the variability of the sector – with individual GP practices having different processes and team cultures – can often make it difficult for nurses to blow the whistle and to speak out when they see the need for change.
As part of the report, ‘Speaking up: the challenges and changes needed in primary care’, Nursing in Practice spoke with a general practice nurse (GPN) from the south of England, who shared their experience of the challenges faced by whistleblowers in healthcare.
Despite raising concerns about patient safety and poor practices, this GPN told that they had endured bullying, exclusion, and stress-induced sick leave. Choosing to remain anonymous, they emphasised that the protection for whistleblowers must improve, with greater external support needed for nurses to safely raise concerns.
Even after being targeted for speaking out, they refused to leave their workplace, fearing the issues would go unresolved if they did. The GPN called for the creation of a ‘safe space’ where all GP staff can raise complaints, separate from their workplace, to ensure they are taken seriously and supported.
